In partnership with the Los Angeles Sentinel and Crenshaw Leadership Council
The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) and the Los Angeles Sentinel, in conjunction with the Crenshaw Leadership Council, have partnered to bring the Metro to Crenshaw / LAX Business Opportunities Summit to the South Los Angeles community. Business leaders, elected officials, local businesses, and community leaders are invited to join Metro CEO Arthur Leahy and senior Metro staff for this historic event. The event will occur on Monday, October 28, 2013 at 9:00 am at the California African American Museum, 600 State Street in Exposition Park. Metro and the Sentinel invite all local, small, minority and women owned businesses, business leaders, and residents seeking to come out and learn about non-construction related professional career opportunities.
The Summit will highlight the broad range of business and economic opportunities available at Metro, including but not limited to the work that is about to begin on the Crenshaw / LAX Transit Corridor. Walsh / Shea, the contractor for the Crenshaw / LAX Light Rail Transportation Project, will also present information about their procurement and subcontracting opportunities that will be available along the Corridor. In addition, Metro will highlight professional career opportunities, including project management, engineering, and the Bus Operators Academy.
During last year’s Taste of Soul Festival, Metro hosted Trade Union Apprentice Coordinators and pre-apprenticeship programs at their massive exhibit. This Summit marks the first time that Metro has reached out specifically to the South Los Angeles Business community in this manner. As part of the vision shared by Metro and the Sentinel Newspaper, Metro is truly coming to the community, bringing their purchasing, certification, Human Relations and other Departments in to South LA. Participants will interact with procurement officers to learn about specific professional or purchasing opportunities, certification specialists to learn how to become Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) and/or Small Business Enterprise (SBE) certified, transit-oriented development opportunities, and much more. In addition, Summit participants’ progress will be tracked to determine specific outcomes.
At a meeting earlier this year, Art Leahy, CEO of Metro, and Danny Bakewell, CEO of Bakewell Enterprises, discussed their mutual desire to bring Metro to the community. As a result, Metro and the Los Angeles Sentinel made a commitment to work together to inform local businesses and leaders in the community about economic opportunities that will be available along the Corridor and throughout Los Angeles County. Metro to Crenshaw/LAX Business Opportunities Summit is a result of that shared vision.
Mr. Bakewell and Mr. Leahy are definitely no strangers to this type of vision and foresight. Mr. Bakewell has touched countless lives with his vision for improving the local community. Whether educating children via new school construction or bringing the community together at one of the largest festivals in America, Taste of Soul, Mr. Bakewell’s commitment to the community remains strong.
Mr. Leahy’s commitment to transportation in the community remains strong as well. “My life in the Transportation industry has afforded me a great opportunity to be of service. From my days of driving the #40 Bus on Crenshaw Blvd, to my time now as CEO, I remain determined to let others see how this industry is a uniting force for good, connecting people to workplaces, entertainment, opportunities and ultimately, invigorating the entire region.”
The Crenshaw/LAX Transportation Corridor is a major investment of public transportation dollars that can bring significant economic enhancement to the Crenshaw and Inglewood communities. This type of investment will benefit the entire community and the Metro to Crenshaw / LAX Business Opportunities Summit will assist residents in learning how to take advantage of opportunities that become available along the Corridor.
