Thousands of people are expected to attend the 89th Session of the Southern California Conference of the A.M.E. Church. 

The annual convocation, led by Bishop T. Kirkland, Sr., presiding prelate of the Fifth Episcopal District, and Mrs. Mary L. Kirkland, Episcopal Supervisor, starts Monday, October 7 through Sunday, October 16, at the Sheraton LAX Gateway Hotel.

The conference hosts are the Rev. Dr. Vernon S. Burroughs, Rev. Denise J. Burroughs and the members of Grant A.M.E. Church in Los Angeles.  Presiding Elder Roosevelt Lindsey and Dr. Kaye Lindsey are the host leaders of the Los Angeles-San Diego-Las Vegas District.

“This is an important gathering for all local A.M.E. members as well as believers in the gospel of Christ Jesus.  Our activities will focus on preparing the saints and strengthening the church universal to do the work of ministry that is critical to our continuing success in these challenging times,” said Bishop Kirkland.

Activities began with the Pre-Conference Musical on Sunday, October 6 at 4 p.m., at Grant A.M.E., 10435 South Central Avenue in Los Angeles.  The Southern California Conference (SCC) Choir will perform under the direction of Ron Lowe and Byron Smith.

On Monday, October 7, the SCC Women In Ministry, led by the Rev. Felicia Bagneris McCloud, will sponsor workshops and a luncheon at Grant A.M.E.  The evening worship takes place at the Sheraton at 7 p.m.

Supervisor Kirkland will convene the SCC Women’s Missionary Society Convention on Tuesday, October 8, at 8 a.m., at the Sheraton.   The WMS ‘Night in White’ service begins at 7 p.m.  The convention concludes on Wednesday, October 9, at noon.

Bishop Kirkland will preside over conference business beginning Wednesday, and continuing on Thursday, October 10 and Friday, October 11 at 10 a.m.  Worship services are set each night at 7 p.m.

Pastor Taurus Myhand of Ward A.M.E. Church will preach on Wednesday and the Sons of Thunder service will be held on Thursday.  Friday is designated as Lay Witness Night and includes the play, ‘Free Religion,’ directed by Stephen Semien.

On Saturday, October 15, the ordination service takes place at 10:30 a.m.  Also, conference youth will meet on Friday and Saturday, then close out with a worship and praise service at 6 p.m. The Closing Worship and Commissioning Service will be held Sunday, October 13 at 3 p.m.
