Once again, it’s that time of year when everybody comes out to have a good time.
The 8th annual Taste of Soul Family Festival (TOS) will take over Crenshaw on Saturday, Oct. 19. Already established as the biggest and best of all festivals in Los Angeles, TOS is sure to top last year, which drew an estimated 300,000 along Crenshaw Blvd.
Created by Danny Bakewell Sr., TOS turns Crenshaw Blvd into a family-oriented event for the community every year. This festival was created to celebrate and partake in all the aspects that make this community a hot commodity and hub for South Los Angeles.
In 2011, TOS experienced a large growth in attendance, so much so, that it extended three additional blocks. Now reaching from Rodeo Blvd to Stocker Ave., there is more room for entertainment, food and other goods for the community to sample. This year looks to have close to, if not more than 300 vendors and multiple stages including a Radio FREE 102.3 FM KJLH stage, The Wave Stage and StarQuest stage.
Taste of Soul created a buzz throughout popular media with an impressive voter registration drive with its inaugural StarQuest talent competition. The event trended on Twitter and escalated on Facebook with more than 60,000, serving as a powerful economic engine among African American small businesses and providing citizens with much valued transportation tips from Metro.
This year is no different. StarQuest is set introduce more talent to the South Los Angeles community and world. There are 24 contestants this year, 12 adults and 12 youth who will take to the stage to show their talent. Ultimately, one adult and one child will be chosen.
TOS continues to have the welcomed support of the most influential, local elected officials and community leaders such as Jesse Jackson, Sr., Herb Wesson, Bernard Parks, Mark Ridley-Thomas, Marguerite LaMotte, Chief Charlie Beck among many others have experienced TOS. Special and honored guests such as television news anchors, Pat Harvey and Christine Devine will be at TOS 2013 as a co-chair and ambassador respectively.
The real magnet that attracts the multitudes to TOS crowd is the numerous vendors who will be on hand. From food to clothing and everything in between, numerous booths will line Crenshaw. Some of the best food can be sampled at TOS including, soul food, cajun food, desserts, ice cream and turkey legs…TOS has it all.
A true family event, TOS also features a variety of music ranging from gospel to jazz, with some of the hottest artists performing at one of a number of stages. Artists such as Mindless Behavior, Mario and Patrice Rushen are some of the musical talent that will grace the stages at this year’s TOS.
Taste of Soul is the community’s festival and it’s a time for everyone to enjoy one another. Good food, good music and a festive atmosphere are at the heart of this event. Come out and experience Taste of Soul.
