Like many of the businesses in the still-thriving artist community known as Leimert Park Village, the World Stage has seen its share of ups and downs. Variously known as the World Stage Art, Education and Performance Gallery, The World Stage and or simply “The Stage,” it’s been the hub of jazz and literary activity in Leimert Park since its founding in 1989 by the late jazz drum king Billy Higgins and by poet/community activist Kamau Daáood. The Stage, whose slogan is “seeking light through sound,” is currently on an uptick. Producer Peter Jackson has seized the reins and has managed to bring in a few groups for the December timeframe for the nearly 40-seat venue. This past weekend it was the Billy Childs Trio, with Jerry Watts on bass and Joe Heredia on drums, playing Childs’ original music as well as that of his idol Herbie Hancock. Next week it’s the Rubato Elegante Group on Dec. 16 and Upala Field Unit on Dec. 17. For more information about upcoming events in the new year, just go to www.theworldstage.org. As they like to say, “You honor us with your visit.” So visit.
