NOT GOING ANYWHERE: Stanford Cardinal coach David Shaw leads his team onto the field for the historical 100th anniversary of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on New Years Day, but the Cardinal came up short in a 24-22 affair. Image360/Jevone Moore Photo

I never anticipated the 100 anniversary of the fabled Rose Bowl to live up to it’s hype, because usually the Big 10 opponent that come to sunny Southern California gets clocked every time.

Especially since, Stanford has become to new Rose Bowl normal from the Pac 12 with hotshot head coach David Shaw leading the sturdy and powerful Cardinal to its second consecutive Rose Bowl.

However, I must admit that even I was mildly surprised when his turned out to be a competitive affair and the green clad Spartans came out on top, rallying for a 24-22 victory.

“It’s unbelievable man I got a lot of family out here and I got teammates who got a lot of family out here and I am just glad to win it for Michigan State,” said Spartan defensive back Trae Waynes during the post game celebration.

Meanwhile the white clad Cardinal, which had to endure Michigan State fans purchasing up most their allotment of tickets, where long gone to the dressing room.

Obviously feeling they had let one get away after dominated the first half, only to lead by 17-14, and settling for a fourth quarter filed goal when they needed a touchdown to tie it.

The Larger question is what happens to the Cardinal going forward. They finished with and impressive 11-3 record, including a victory over Oregon but will graduated its vaunted offensive line and star running back Tyler Gaffney.

Stanford head coach was one everybody’s wish list leading into the game, but ultimately is just a much better fit for the mild mannered Cardinal than he would be anywhere else.

Michigan State will bolt from the shadows of its more popular Big 10 rivals Ohio State and Michigan and has now won three consecutive bowl games and improved it’s Rose Bowl record to 4-1 all time.

The Spartans many alumnus, which include Magic Johnson are jumping for joy now and while neither Stanford or Michigan State will make you rush to your television set to watch them play, their style of winning consist of ground and pound running attack, and a defense that would make both the 49ers and Seahawks proud.

FAT & FULL

For roughly four decades I have been covering sports and this year decided to check out the 100th anniversary of the Rose Bowl featuring Stanford and Michigan State in Pasadena.

I even decided to stay at the media site hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

You are probably wondering to yourself, boy he must have had a great time?

Because whites dominate the media profession, needless to say there were very few brothers or sisters in the bunch.

There was a time some 30 plus years ago when it bothered me, but today I am used to it.

I am used to getting my credential checked more frequently than others, I am used to seeing young white kids have the same access that I do, although you can clearly see they are not working members of the media.

I am used to events such as the Rose Bowl, where they start you off with a complementary breakfast at 9 in the morning, by the time you arrive at the stadium, a hot tin tray of breakfast burritos await you, and if you are still hungry just wait for the lunch that begins at 11am.

Each entree comes with an unlimited supply of beverages and other assorted snacks that might meet the sponsorship branding rights.
