Portland Trail Blazers All-Star guard Brandon Roy is expected to announce his medical retirement due to degenerative knees.

Roy has had three knee surgeries over the past 18 months, and he was limited to 47 games last season due to the knee injuries.  Both of his knees lack cartilage, meaning that there is no cushion between the bones.

Roy was the sixth overall draft pick in 2006, was the 2007 Rookie of the Year, and was named to three All-Star games.

A medical retirement will mean that the Trail Blazers can erase Roy’s contract from their payroll beginning next season, as long as Roy does not return to the NBA before then and that a doctor agrees that he can no longer play due to the injury.

Roy is owed $64 million over the next four seasons.
