Hit web channel reaches new heights

Imagine a television channel committed to creating content that accurately depicts Black life and Black love – welcome to Black & Sexy TV.  A web-based television channel, Black & Sexy TV is the brainchild of four filmmakers Numa Perrier, Dennis Dortch, Jeanine Daniels, and Brian Ali-Harding.

Starting with one show and expanding to five, the channel has seen explosive growth in just two short years of using YouTube as a platform.

“We sort of figured out that, oh, wait a minute, all of us can do a show separately,” explained Dortch. “We were able to do more shows because our brain trust was growing. One person took the lead [on a show] and we supported that person. We just went off and spread our wings.  It really wasn’t the most sane thing, but we just kept going. “

Sane or not, viewers are certainly pleased they kept going. With millions of views, thousands of comments, and over 60,000 subscribers, Black & Sexy TV shows no signs of slowing down.

When we first spoke to them last year ‘The Couple’ was gaining traction with fans online.  Dortch told us then “this is really where the future is, online. Production companies and studios are starting to throw a lot of money into this so we’re sort of looking at it with two lenses.  We’re not just looking at it as a means to end up getting to TV.”

But less than a year later, TV found them.  An executive at HBO stumbled upon “The Couple” web series and fell in love.  Just recently ‘The Couple’ entered into a development deal with HBO and that’s not the only noteworthy fan they’ve attracted.  Perrier described it as a ‘hip hip hooray moment’ when film giant Spike Lee asked to join the team.  Lee is set to executive produce “The Couple” on HBO.

In a Black History Month/Valentine’s Week exclusive, The Los Angeles Sentinel caught up with the entire cast and crew at the Black & Sexy headquarters to talk Black Love.  The casts of “The Couple,” “That Guy,” “Hello Cupid,” “Roomieloverfriends” and “Yellow” spoke candidly about their shows, their loves, their lives and what they think about Black Love. It was an open discussion that held nothing back and let you have everything—and then some.

With shows that focus on Black life in a simple way, the creators of Black & Sexy TV have honored their commitment to share authentic Black experiences and have gained a lot of attention in the process.

“’Roomielovefriends’ took off for us too and it just literally exploded. That’s our biggest show.  That brought us a lot of shine back,” said Dortch of the channel’s highest rated show. “Roomieloverfriends” actors Andra Fuller and Shayla Hale have chemistry on (and off) screen that keeps viewers coming back.

“I’m going to go ahead it’s safe to say that I will never understand the opposite sex,” joked Fuller when asked if filming the show has helped him understand women better.  He did express however, a joy in being able to portray on-screen things that in real-life women may not understand.

“A lot of times ladies see guys jumping from female to female not knowing exactly why. And we get a chance to show why, because he’s been rejected by the woman he’s interested in,” shared Fuller.

On the show “Hello Cupid” Black & Sexy TV explores the dimensions of dating and the role of skin complexion.

“That’s what I love about working at Black & Sexy. All of their shows are about something great and something important that’s going on in the world and to make a difference, but not in a preachy way,” says the shows co-star Hayley Marie Norman.

With a growing audience and an innovative business model Black & Sexy TV is creating and sharing content worth paying attention to.

Each video uploaded to the channel opens with a quote that sums up the mission, “We deserve to be celebrated in our simplest day-to-day experiences. That’s part of our commitment,” Black & Sexy TV.
