Arie Jones

February 11 marked the 69th anniversary of Holman United Methodist Church.  At the worship services commemorating the momentous occasion, the congregation also acknowledged another milestone, the largest contribution the church has ever received, $363,080 from the estate of longtime Holman member, Arie Wheeler Jones.

The bulk of Mrs. Jones $1.7 million estate was bequeathed to four institutions that had the most impact on her life, Huston-Tillotson University, University of Southern California, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Holman UMC.

Mrs. Jones attended and graduated from Huston-Tillotson University with a bachelor's degree in education in 1936.  It was there that she joined the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.

After graduation, Mrs. Jones worked in the Houston Public School system until relocating to California in 1946. She attended the University of Southern California where she received her Master's degree in Education in 1951.

Her passion for education and teaching was demonstrated throughout her 32-year career in the Los Angeles Unified School District.  She became a life-long member of Holman United Methodist in the late 1950s where she raised her son, Ronald.

Arie Wheeler Jones passed away in May 2010 at the age of 96, having led a full life of public and community service.  Her legacy of generosity and caring will continue through her gift that will sustain the mission of Holman "to make disciples for Jesus Christ by bringing hope-filled Christ-inspired responses to urban needs."

Holman United Methodist Church is located at 3320 West Adams Boulevard in Los Angeles. Pastor Kelvin Sauls leads Sunday Worship services at 8 a.m. and 11 a.m.   For information, call (323) 731-7285 or visit www.holmanumc.com.
