Hundreds of Christian Methodists will gather next week as Bishop James B. Walker, presiding prelate of the Ninth Episcopal District of the C.M.E. Church, convenes the Mid-Winter Council of the Southern California Region (SCR).

The annual symposium starts Friday, December 9, and continues to Saturday, December 10, at Hays Tabernacle C.M.E. Church, 10121 South Central Avenue in Los Angeles. Rev. Julio Andujo is host pastor and SCR Administrator.

Also, Rev. Wendell M. Oldham, Jr., presiding elder of the Los Angeles District, and Rev. John Deron Johnson, presiding elder of the Los Angeles/San Diego District, will participate.

Among the guest speakers will be Rev. Paul Nixon of the Epicenter United Methodist Church in Washington D.C. A church planter and congregational development specialist, Rev. Nixon is also the author of ‘I Refuse to Lead a Dying Church' and ‘Finding Jesus on the Metro.'

Highlighting Friday's activities are registration at 8 a.m., and the SCR Women's Missionary Society workshop and training at 8:45 a.m. Mrs. Wanda Thomas is SCR Missionary President and Mrs. Shirley Levingston is the local host president.

Bishop Walker will open the General Session at 1 p.m., and at 3 p.m., Rev. Nixon will speak. Evening worship begins at 7 p.m., with Rev. Michael Wade of St. Paul C.M.E. as worship leader and sermon by Rev. Marrix Seymore of Amos Temple C.M.E. - Riverside.

Saturday's agenda includes registration at 8 a.m., and morning worship at 9 a.m. The worship leader will be Rev. Marshall Sharpe of Phillips Temple C.M.E. - San Diego. The preacher will be Rev. Pansy Washington of Amos Memorial C.M.E. in Los Angeles.

The General Session, led by Bishop Walker, convenes at 9:30 a.m., and will feature reports by the Presiding Elders. The closing worship service takes place at 12:30 p.m. Rev. Brian Reese of First C.M.E.-Williamson Temple will be the worship leader and Rev. Byron L. Smith, Sr. of Curry Temple C.M.E. will bring the message.
