Former Speaker John Perez bows out of race

Board of Equalization member and State Controller Candidate Betty Yee (who was endorsed by the Los Angeles Sentinel)  has won her bid for the Democratic Nomination over former State Speaker John Perez

Perez in a demonstration of party unity withdrew from the contest and released the following statement:  “Today I have made the decision to bring the recount process to an end, and pledge my full support to Betty Yee to be California’s next Controller.

“While I strongly believe that completing this process would result in me advancing to the general election, it is clear that there are significant deficiencies in the process itself which make continuing the recount problematic. Even in the effort so far, we have found uncounted ballots, but there is simply not enough time to see this process through to the end, given the fact that counties must begin printing ballots in the next few weeks in order to ensure that overseas and military voters can receive their ballots in a timely manner. “

With all the votes now counted and canvasses completed in all 58 counties, Yee has secured the Democratic nomination for State Controller and will advance to the November general election against Republican Ashley Swearengin.

“I want to thank the voters of California for their trust and support,” said Yee.

“I look forward to bringing my extensive finance experience into the office of Controller. I want to congratulate Assembly Speaker Emeritus Perez for his strong and positive campaign and for his leadership in restoring fiscal stability to California.   With the campaign now behind us, I call upon all Democrats to unite in the effort to hold this vital position as California’s Chief Financial Officer.”
