BOE Chairman Horton Presented Opening Remarks at the White House Business Council: "American Jobs Act" Conference

Board of Equalization Chairman Jerome E. Horton recently presented opening remarks at the White House Business Council, "American Jobs Act" Conference, at the California State University, Los Angeles Ballroom.  This premiere event highlighted President Obama's American Jobs Act and how it will directly benefit California’s small business owners and the billions of dollars in new resources and incentives that may be available to the State of California.

"I want to commend President Obama for his "American Jobs Act" initiative." Horton said.  "From tax cuts to help America’s small businesses hire new workers and putting workers back on the job, to modernizing our infrastructure, reforming our unemployment program, and providing tax relief for working households, the president understands that putting Americans back to work is critical to our economic health long-term."

Horton was joined by White House representative, David Hinson, National Director of the U.S. Minority Business Development Agency. Mike Rossi, Governor Brown's Senior Advisor on jobs and business development, Joel Ayala, Director of the Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development, Andrew Gudger, Director, Office of Small Business Programs, as well as a host of other panelists.

The small business forum, with over 200 small business owners and sponsored by the White House Business Council, in partnership with Coastline Community College's Institute for Economic Development and Governor Jerry Brown's Office of Business and Economic Development, was designed for the state's 3.5 million small businesses to ensure that their voices are heard in the governor's office and in the White House.

"Small businesses employ over 52% of California’s workforce," Horton noted, "and that represents over 98% of our state's employers.  It is critical that small business owners, and entrepreneurs interested in starting a new business enterprise, use their imagination, creativity, and ingenuity to create business models that are on the cutting-edge of small business development." He added.

"It is no longer business as usual." Horton concluded, "With an ever-evolving global economy, small businesses must find a way to the cutting edge and build a bridge to the other side."

Elected in 2010, Chairman Jerome E. Horton is the Fourth District Member of the California State Board of Equalization, representing more than 8.5 million residents in Los Angeles County.  He is also the Board of Equalization Legislative Committee chairman.  He is the first to serve on the Board of Equalization with over 21 years of experience at the BOE. Horton previously served as an Assembly Member of the California State Assembly from 2000-2006.
