Members of New Jericho Christian Church honored one of their own on Sunday, October 2. Charter member Edythe Bassett, lovingly known as ‘Mama B,' received recognition for her commitment, loyalty and volunteer spirit.
New Jericho was established in 2008 and Bassett was there from the start, sharing in the Rev. Dr. Wendell Davis' founding principles: "Shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock," 1 Peter 5:2-3.
Suffering with chronic back pain for years, ‘Mama B' has been a mainstay in the church, working and giving, even while in pain. Known for her creative floral design flare, she routinely embellishes the church sanctuary with beautiful arrangements.
"Mama B is an example to the young people in the church," Pastor Davis commented. He drew his sermon from Proverbs 31, in honor of the day, detailing how his faithful member possesses many qualities of the Proverbs 31 Woman. Recounting a lengthy and methodical shopping adventure he had gone on with Bassett, Pastor Davis joked, "Wow, have you ever gone shopping with Mama B!"
"Thank you, thank you, thank you. That's all I can say. I didn't expect all of this," Bassett exclaimed as her two sons, other family and friends looked on.
Some family members shared an acrostic poem to celebrate the occasion:
E-D-Y-T-H-EExtraordinary- because you simply are!
Dedicated- you are a tireless servant. Whether you are whipping up a sweet delight for all to enjoy or working as a community volunteer, you never stop giving.
You- are special; your ministry of catering and floral design has blessed so many, and we love you.
Tenacity- she never lets a hurdle get in the way of her works.
Helper- you are an example to all of us"You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to our Father who is in heaven." Matthew 5:13-16
Endurance- if you are going shopping with her, you better plan to stay a while because she is going to walk down every isle!
