Pastor William and First Lady Agretta Epps
Second Baptist Church of Los Angeles will celebrate the 24th Pastoral Anniversary of the Rev. Dr. William Saxe Epps and First Lady Agretta Denise Epps on Sunday, October 9, at the 8 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. worship services.
The anniversary theme is ‘Render Honor to Whom Honor is Due' with the scriptural reference of Romans 13:7. The community- at- large, along with church organizations, auxiliaries, commissions, and boards will participate and extend good wishes and appreciation to the pastor and first lady.
Dr. and Mrs. Epps and their family joined with Second Baptist Church in October 1987 as its eighth pastor. Previously, he served as pastor of Second Baptist Church in Detroit, MI; First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC; and Calvary Baptist Church in Haverhill, MA.
Mrs. Epps, a registered nurse, is very involved and a long-time member of Second's Hand Bell Choir and Children's Ministry. She is known as ‘the encourager' and a supporter of all ministries; no job is too small or too large for the first lady.
The Epps' two daughters completed their elementary and secondary education in the Los Angeles Unified School District and the University of California. They are Dr. Jacqueline Epps Spivey (Anton Spivey) and Andrea Epps, Esq.
Dr. Epps is known across the nation as an outstanding teacher and prolific preacher. He is credited with leading the congregation through an innovative campaign, raising funds for the preservation, restoration and modernization of the current sanctuary built in 1926.
During his tenure, Second Baptist was placed on the U.S. Department of the Interior's National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
He has the distinction of serving as the pastor of Second Baptist for 24 years, a span longer than any of Second's previous seven pastors. Dr. Epps is also credited with sustaining the congregation through what is referred to as ‘The Challenging Years.'
Under his leadership, the church has an extensive outreach program to the community through its Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. Center for Early Learning, recycling program, and community relations support for AIDS patients at the MLK Oasis Center.
The church annually holds worldwide communion celebrating with Christians around the world every first Sunday in October and on the same day, commemorates its Homecoming Sunday. This year, World Wide Communion will be held on Sunday, October 2, at 3 p.m.
Also, Dr. Epps, in collaboration with church members, developed Second's strategic plan, ‘Vision 20/20,' which describes spiritual, cultural and economic goals through 2020. He also serves as the Vice President for the United States in the Baptist World Alliance and is affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA, the Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc. and the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc.
The public is invited to attend the 24th Pastoral Anniversary worship services. The 8 a.m. service has broadcast live on Radio Free KJLH FM for 41 years. Immediately following the 11:15 a.m. service, a reception will be held in Griffith Hall.
