St. Vincent de Paul Reports All-Time Record Sales at its Los Angeles and Long Beach stores

Here’s “another sign of the times” story idea for you --

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, which serves the poor through its shelters and programs in Los Angeles, Long Beach and Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, announced today that is has achieved record store sales at its stores in Los Angeles and Long Beach.

Sales at the Los Angeles store, the largest thrift store in Los Angeles County with over 95,000 square feet of retail space, were $368,941 for the month of August, an all-time record. Sales at the Long Beach store were $61,941, also a record.
According to David Fields, the Executive Director of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, the record store sales are directly attributable to the struggling economy, “People who formerly shopped at discount stores are now shopping at our stores. And people who are moving or downsizing are contributing their goods to us, including furniture, toys and clothes, giving us record inventories of goods we are able to sell in our stores. The entertainment industry has also discovered us and prop masters from shows like Mad Men and Pan Am have been combing through our stores looking for phones, desks, furniture and clothes from those periods.”

The millions of dollars in annual income from the stores benefit those in most need – going directly to programs and homeless shelters serving the poor and the Circle V Ranch Camp operated by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

According to the Paris-based Orginsation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) the United States now has the highest poverty rate among developed countries. The US Census Bureau, in a report issued last week, says that over 46 million Americans were living in poverty in 2010, about 15 percent of the total US population. One in five American children now lives in poverty. ??
