Soon, each of five million residential and small business Southern California Edison (SCE) customers will have new tools to help manage their electricity usage. SCE's smart meters will deliver detailed information on electricity consumption, along with smarter web tools, programs, and incentives to help you find new opportunities for saving energy.

Smart meters also play an important role in helping to shift the entire region's electricity consumption to off-peak night hours, which contributes to a more efficient electricity system. President Barack Obama and the Department of Energy support smart meters to empower Americans to save energy and cut utility bills

SCE smart meters are based on industry-leading technology with rigorous security features and a thorough testing protocol. They are designed to interoperate freely with off-the-shelf energy-management devices that will come to market soon. Their security is proven, and they will play an important role in improved power delivery and performance.

As SCE introduce smart meters, new programs, incentives, and web tools will be rolled out to help customers conserve electricity. With a text message, email or phone call, SCE can inform a costumer of special savings opportunities--for example, on hot summer afternoons when demand soars--and a costumer can earn incentives just by turning off the air conditioning.

SCE believes that the smart meter program will help Los Angeles residents save electricity. In fact, SCE expects that it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Southern California by an estimated 365,000 metric tons per year--the equivalent of removing 79,000 cars from the region's roads.

Smart technologies play an important role in SCE's forward-looking strategy for cleaner energy. Saving electricity is more cost-effective--and environmentally friendly--than generating more. With smart meters to help, customers will be able to conserve more electricity, and save money.
