Soul Burger has taken flight and coming to a TV near you.
By Brian W. Carter, Sentinel Staff Writer
Collard greens, sweet potatoes, dressing, cheese, turkey patty and fried chicken—all on a burger? Soul Burger (SB) has redefined what a burger is and taken it to a land beyond. These burgers boast some of the most delectable soul food sides anyone has had the pleasure of eating at one time or another. Now SB is gaining momentum and on its way to becoming a household name.
SB was featured on KTLA Channel 5 morning news back in March, having had the pleasure of feeding Mark Kriski, staff and crew. Last week, they were featured and selected as the No. 1 burger on ABC 7 news as a part of its special 4th of July best places in LA. They’ve also recently received numerous accolades from many publications and will be featured on the Food Network’s Outrageous Foods on July 8 at 10:00PM ET/PT. There are even rumblings of a possible reality TV show in the future.
Toni Malone is an entertainer of the past 30 years and has traveled all over performing with well-known artists. Malone started SB simply cooking for friends and family. "One day, I decided to put some soul food items on it because I was in a rush with my schedule." From the first bite to the last, everyone knew Malone’s burgers would become famous.
SB opened in June 2010 and recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. “By the grace of God, we had our one-year celebration … It was fabulous,” said Malone. “We had over 300 people show up.” It was a community event that not only celebrated SB but Holly Park Plaza and its owner L.E. Valtry. Valtry has owned the plaza since 1984.
Malone has recently finished her latest burger creation, the “Outrageous Soul Burger.” The burger boasts the works, which include pastrami, mac ‘n’ cheese and host of other tasty items. “It’s large…” said Malone.
Soul Burger is available for catering so if you’re in the neighborhood, drop on by. They have 13 different burgers, all with their own style, flavor and soul. All soul burgers are prepared with a turkey patty on a toasted sesame seed bun. The burger takes on a whole other dimension when greens, yams, dressing, cranberry sauce, gravy and a fried egg are added.
Soul Burgers is located at 1035 S. Prairie Ave in Inglewood. For more information, you can contact SB at (310) 419-SOUL (7685).
