When we look at the latest headline news, we read about fallen leaders. Most recently in our news, we find politicians, pastors of large churches, high profile celebrities and iconic sports personalities who have admitted to or been accused of inappropriate sexual relations. Exactly, why do we continue to see cycles of this? Because you are not as strong as you think you are.
For a good Bible study, look up Judges chapters 13 - 16. To sum up the story in the Bible about the Judge Samson and Delilah, Samson was deceived because he wanted to believe her lies. For the younger generation, a parallel can be drawn from the music video, "Love the Way You Lie", with Eminem and Rihanna.
What happens to people who are destined for greatness from a very young age? In the story of Samson, the angel visited his mother and told her the things he should never participate in and told her he was being raised up to free Israel from the Philistines.
Samson, like many fallen leaders, used his special gifts and abilities for selfish purposes and sometimes for vengeance. Many times people choose to sleep with the enemy or desire to have something or someone that does not belong to them. After it is all said and done, the participants in the inappropriate behaviors are humiliated, enslaved, blinded and dishonored.
However, as bad as the inappropriateness seems, God can still forgive them and give them an opportunity to complete the original great purpose for their lives. Like Samson, his last feat brought victory to his nation. As you read the Hall of Fame in Hebrews 11, Samson is included among the Heroes of Faith.
What were the weakness and mistakes of Samson? (1) He made a vow and violated the law of God on many occasions; (2) He was controlled by sensuality; (3) He confided in the wrong people and used his gifts and abilities unwisely.
From the lesson, we can learn: (1) Great strength in one area of life does not make up for great weakness in other areas; (2) God's presence does not overwhelm a person's will; and (3) God can use a person of faith in spite of his or her mistakes (NLT Study Bible notes).
How can you keep your desire for love and sexual pleasure from deceiving you? (1) Submit yourself to an accountability group; (2) Determine, before passion takes you over, what kind of person you will love; (3) Have in place non-negotiable items; and (4) Run from fornication and lusts.
