Nevada starting wide receiver Brandon Wimberly, who attended Gardena High School, was shot in the abdomen early Saturday morning in downtown Reno.

Reports are that Wimberly and a group of Nevada football players were in a fight with another group of unidentified people.

Members of the other group got into a car, which Wimberly approached.  Somebody inside the car open fire on Wimberly, and then the group fled from the scene.

Wimberly was in serious condition, but his injuries are not considered life threatening.  There has been a report that his football career may be over.  According to the Reno Gazette-Journal, Wimberly “suffered major injuries to his colon and intestines” and that “the incoming junior isn’t expected to play football again.”

Wimberly is on schedule to graduate in December, which would allow him to obtain a degree in less than four years.

At press time there have been no suspects publicly identified by Reno police.

Wimberly was the WAC freshman of the year in 2009 when he had 53 receptions for 733 yards and six touchdowns, and he had 41 receptions for 482 yards last season.

Wimberly was a first team All Marine League selection as a junior and a senior at Gardena High School in 2006 and 2007, and he was named first team all area as a senior. He is majoring in speech communication.
