Super Dad's (Father's) Day will be celebrated on Sunday, June 19, during the Sunday morning services at the Love Peace and Happiness Family Christian Fellowship Church, announced Bishop Leon and Dr. Jacqueline Martin, pastor and first lady.

"We extend an open invitation to the community at large to join us as we honor fatherhood. Our celebrations will convene at 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m., at our Downey location at 11022 Old River School Road," said Bishop Martin.

"Then, at 11:15 a.m., we will worship at our Los Angeles church at 4951 South Figueroa Street. All fathers present at these services will receive special recognition in observance of Father's Day."

Bishop Martin shared that Father's Day originated in 1910, when Mrs. John Bruce Dodd, a Spokane, Washington housewife, sought a way to honor her father, William Smart. He was a Civil War veteran who had reared six motherless children.

"Mrs. Dodd wrote a letter to the Spokane Ministerial Alliance suggesting that the role of all fathers be properly recognized. With the backing of the Alliance and the Spokane Young Men's Christian Association, the third Sunday in June was set aside for sermons to be delivered saluting the fathers of that city," said Bishop Martin.

"Fourteen years later, President Calvin Coolidge recommended national observance of the day, which has since become widely celebrated in the United States."
