Rev. Mark Whitlock and college students

Rev. Mark Whitlock (c) stands with students receiving scholarships.

Aiming to invest in the future of minority students, Christ Our Redeemer (COR) A.M.E. Church in Irvine donated $60,000 to minority students enrolled in Orange County colleges and universities on May 29.

"Every year, COR has raised funds to inspire deserving college students who embody the character and leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This action is intended to provide worthy students an opportunity to achieve a higher level of education, and to pay homage to a true American icon," said Reverend Mark Whitlock, senior minister.

"COR's objective is to award deserving students with financial support toward achieving their academic and professional dreams. One scholarship recipient received $5,000, while the other winners received scholarships between $1,000 and $3,000," he said. Also, COR presented $25 to all graduating high school seniors and $100 to all graduating college students attending the service.

More than $225,000 in scholarships has been awarded to minority students attending Orange County colleges and universities. Students were required to submit a detailed application including a personal statement and an essay, which is reviewed and evaluated by a scholarship committee.

Christ Our Redeemer AME Church, located at 46 Maxwell, Irvine, is the largest A.M.E. church in Orange County, CA with more than 3,000 multi-racial members. The COR Community Development Corporation (CDC) was formed in 2001 to raise funds for scholarships to students attending Orange County colleges and universities.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Scholarship Gospel Concert serves as the COR CDC fund raising vehicle. The organization has raised thousands of dollars under the leadership of Ron and Karla Guyer, Alisa Covington, Keith and Mara Murray, and Rev. Mark and Hermia Whitlock.
