Rev. Joseph and Mrs. Evelyn Curtiss
The annual United Gospel Outreach Summer Camp takes place Sunday, July 3, through Saturday, July 9 at the beautiful campsite of the Boy Scouts of America in the Arrowhead Springs area. For over 35 years, United Gospel Outreach (UGO) has been sending inner-city youth to camp and according to Rev. Joseph and Mrs. Evelyn Curtiss, their lives have been greatly impacted.
"Our camp director, Saundra Nelson, and her staff have been diligently planning each month since September 2010, and they are excited to share their well planned program this year. The theme is ‘Investing in God's Economy' and will include learning activities throughout the week," said Rev. Curtiss, UGO founder and owner of Word of Life Christian Bookstores.
The weeklong recreation includes swimming, hiking, games, campfire time and interactive-life sharing lessons, he explained. "Taking youth from the asphalts streets of the city into the mountains to view God's creation and experience the beauty of nature helps them connect with God in a special way while among their peers."
Rev. Curtiss noted that many lasting friendships are made at UGO camp. "One youth pastor stated that sending a youth to a one-week summer camp can be more powerful than a year of Sunday School or church."
Since many young people desire to attend camp, but lack funds, UGO accepts donations of any size to help sponsor youth. All contributions are tax deductible and payable to: United Gospel Outreach. The total cost for one camper is $180.
"Any gift is an investment in helping youth find God in a greater way at camp. This is a far better investment to help a youth connect with God for life than to miss the opportunity and end up paying thousands of taxpayers dollars to camp detention or prison," Rev. Curtiss said.
Rev. Curtiss established United Gospel Outreach in 1968 as a non-profit Christian organization. He added, "UGO is not a church, but a mission organization promoting community outreach ministry and missions internationally."
