Freshman, sophomore and junior proms occur, but are usually not considered as important as the senior promBy Cheryl Tillman LeeFamily EditorIt's prom season and a Prom Queen and Prom King is selected. These are honorary titles awarded to students chosen in a school wide vote prior to the prom, and are usually given to seniors. Juniors may also be honored, but would be called "Prom Prince" or "Prom Princess." Other students may be honored with inclusion in a "Prom Court." The selection method for Prom court is similar to that of Homecoming Queen, King, and court. Freshman, sophomore and junior proms do occur, but are usually not considered as important as the senior prom.Proms are like parties, but they also resemble weddings. Couples often look like a young bride and groom in their gowns and tuxedos. The prom started in the 1920s in the United States and is the classic American rite of passage for students from all walks of life.Once dinner is over, the evening tends to become more and more exciting, with the announcement of the prom king and queen. For many schools, the live bands have been replaced by sizzling DJs with a range of the latest tunes to get the students on the dance floor, and the atmosphere in the huge halls hired for these dances is usually electric. The era of selecting popular song titles as themes for the prom began in the late 60s and early 70s. All of this includes corsages, limousines, and photographs. In some form or another, the concept of a chauffeured vehicle has been in existence since the 1700s. Developed with the wealthy in mind, they started as horse drawn carriages, gilded in gold and pulled by only the finest animals. The first automobile limousine developed in 1902 was designed to the driver who sat outside under a covered compartment. The first actual stretch limousine was created in Arkansas around 1928. They were often referred to as big band buses because they were mainly used to transport famous big band leaders, their orchestras, as well as their instruments to various parts of the United States. In the 1930's Limousines really started to take off. They were used to transport guests to the hotel and also on different sightseeing tours. They were used to carry film crew and stage personnel around movie sets. During that time, limousines also became a common accessory for movie actors and actresses. Today, limousines are designed to carry much larger numbers of people. The addition of new technologies and different types of vehicle available to stretch has led to a rise in the new style limos.Perfect for shuttling larger numbers of people around to parties, clubs, weddings, and of course proms. Limousine services are quite busy during the prom season. The word prom comes from the French word promenade, which means walk or stroll.By the 1930s, proms were common and the popularity, of prom stories was published in school papers all over the country. As these stories circulated from state to state, they were taken very seriously. Proms became a passion for some. The 1950s brought about heavy competition for the titles of prom king and queen as a popularity contest. Now, the format of the prom varies from place to place, but a traditional prom usually involves high school students in tuxedos and gowns, along with dancing and music, combined with decorations and a theme.
