When Rev. Dr. James and Mrs. Kathye Jenkins first hosted Bible Study in their home, little did they know God had greater plans. But as the weeks went by and attendance kept increasing, the vision of God became clear.
So, on June 6, 2010, Abundant Grace Bible Church was born. As further confirmation of the will of God, their son, Bishop Michael Jenkins, returned to the Los Angeles area to work with his father as executive pastor and assist with building the ministry.
Preparing to celebrate the first church anniversary, Dr. Jenkins, who serves as senior pastor, has no regrets about stepping out on faith. “With the help of the Lord, we are building a gathering place for the whole family unit; a place where every part of the family can come and meet Jesus, participate in activities, enjoy authentic relationships with other believers and be equipped to do the work of the ministry,” he said.
“We are focused squarely on the teaching of Scripture, the healthy development of the family unit, the Spirit-filled life, prevailing prayer and the salvation of souls,” added Pastor Jenkins.
The worship experience is also geared to all ages, according to Bishop Jenkins. “Abundant Grace is a church where some people get really dressed up and others are really casual. During the 75-minute worship service, you will hear traditional hymns balanced with more contemporary praise and worship.” In addition, children receive personal instruction each Sunday during a special period called ‘Feeding the Lambs.’
Pastor Jenkins, an ordained minister for more than 30 years, has been married to Lady Jenkins for 35 years and they have five children. Known by many as a ‘shepherd with a servant’s heart,’ Pastor Jenkins is also described as a man of great compassion for people, prophetic vision from God, a prevailing prayer life, and passion for the souls of men.
“My philosophy is to focus on the things that matter most to God because happiness is the byproduct of faithfulness to God,” said Rev. Jenkins who is under the pastoral covering of Pastor Perry J. Jones of Messiah Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles.
Bishop Jenkins, who has served 15 years in the ministry, is a member of the Joint-College of African American Pentecostal Bishops’ Congress and the Bishop of The Grace Covenant, which provides spiritual covering to several pastors and churches in California, Texas, Oklahoma, Illinois and Virginia.
“My mission is to liberate the people of God from the power of sin and mediocre lifestyles by reaching beyond the walls of the local church to aid the marginalized and maligned of society,” Bishop Jenkins said.
Both members of the pastoral team are optimistic and enthusiastic about the future of Abundant Grace Bible Church. “We see our Church as a community of believers whose life and activities pivot around the life of the Church; spiritually, physically, educationally, socially, and emotionally. As an outgrowth of that environment the entire family unit grows healthier and develops a desire to touch other people with the love of Jesus Christ, in their respective generations,” Pastor Jenkins said.
“Everyone is invited to come and grow with us,” said Bishop Jenkins. “We worship Sundays at 11 a.m. On the second Sunday, we worship at 3 p.m. All services are held at 14124 South Prairie Avenue in Hawthorne in the American Legion building.”
