WASHINGTON DC--Congresswoman Laura Richardson (D CA37) today announced the winners of the annual Congressional Arts Competition which hosted its awards reception on May 6, 2011 at California State University Dominguez Hills.

Each spring, a nation-wide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the   U. S. House of Representatives. The Congressional Arts Competition is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation, as well as in each congressional district.

Rep. Richardson hosted her fourth Congressional Arts Competition in the 37th District which draws entrants from high schools in Carson, Compton, Long Beach, Signal Hill and Watts Willowbrook.

"Each year we want to encourage our participants in the Congressional Arts Competition that their artistic talents can be an inspiration for them to follow their passion to become artist or to excel in another endeavor of their choosing," stated Rep. Richardson.

The first place winner for the 37th District Congressional Arts Competition was awarded to Long Beach Millikan senior Andrew Cruz Lozano for his unique entry titled 'Freedom of Art' which features a computerized print of 'Uncle Sam' with printed shadow of Marilyn Monroe's face inserted.

Lozano will receive a round trip flight to Washington DC, and his art will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol.

Second place was awarded to another Long Beach Millikan senior Roberto Jesus Sanchez for his entry titled 'What America is to me is Opportunity,' a computerized print of The Declaration of Independence with shadow prints of students in support of public education. The third place finisher was Verbum Dei High School junior Jesus A. Real for his pencil drawing of  'America, The land of Opportunity'. The second place art will be displayed in Rep. Richardson's Washington DC Capitol Office and the third place art will be displayed in Rep. Richardson's 37th District Office in Long Beach, each for the term of one year.

All of the participants received a Congressional Certificate and a congratulatory letter from Rep. Richardson for their efforts.

"I am always impressed with the talent and creativity of our students who amaze me more at each competition. Their dedication and commitment to art and particularly the subject matters they choose to draw from is a reminder of how appreciative they are to be Americans and share this wonder land of opportunity we have," added Rep. Richardson.
