South Los Angeles residents are invited to join AARP, Brotherhood Crusade, Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department and the EXPO Center for a community seminar that shares about the latest technology, discusses the affects of technology on our daily lives, and talks about the manner in which personal goals and values can drive the use of technology. The event, which is geared toward adults 50 and older, but applicable and open to everyone, will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at the EXPO Center, which is located at 3980 Bill Robertson Lane (formerly Menlo Avenue), Los Angeles, California 90037.

During the seminar, in addition to being treated to breakfast and lunch, a panel of experts will break down the latest in technology terms (Facebook, APPS, 3G, 4G, Smartphones, iPads, bandwidth); share how technology can be used to do everything from keeping in touch with family to managing health; and provide consumer tips on how to avoid fraud and scams.

"We are honored to have such a distinguished panel that includes Mr. Eugene Eng, Verizon Vice President of Strategic Programs, West Region; and Ericka Lozano-Buhl, AARP." said Charisse Bremond, Brotherhood Crusade President and CEO. "Understanding technology and its affect on our lives is so hugely important in today's environment. Despite this level of gravity, South Los Angeles residents are gravely deficient with respect to functional academic and business technology skills. This seminar provides an opportunity for residents to learn about and acquire these skills in a culturally sensitive and relaxed setting."

Individuals attending the seminar can expect to receive technology resource guides, participate in hands-on technology demonstrations, and have an opportunity to win a roundtrip airline ticket anywhere Southwest Airlines flies or any of a number of other door prizes.

"Technology change and globalization have driven the need for higher order skill sets for today`s and tomorrow`s businesses as well as access to public and private resources. Greater than 70% of the jobs that will be in demand in the future involve some form of technology and services such as Medicare and Social Security will be completely technology driven in a few short years," continued Bremond. "Indeed, the necessary resources that govern our lives will continue to be automated and we will be required to become more educated and better trained; making the technology skills being offered for free to South Los Angeles residents at this seminar critically necessary for the coming years."

Brotherhood Crusade, AARP, Los Angeles Recreation and Parks and the EXPO Center are joined by various corporate and private partners in their efforts to bring technology education to South Los Angeles. These partners include Verizon, Microsoft, American Honda Foundation, California Consumer Protection Foundation, Southwest Airlines, SEIU ULTCW, JP Morgan Chase, Raytheon, the Zeta Rho Foundation, Nestle USA and The California Endowment.
