The Women's Fellowship Ministry of Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church hosted a ‘Hats off to Mothers' Afternoon Tea' on April 30 in celebration of the women of the church.
"We have wanted to do something like this for quite some time. It is because of the vision and support of our pastor, Rev. George E. Hurtt, that we are here this afternoon," said Suzan Robinson, director of the Women's Fellowship Ministry as she welcomed guests to the event.
The garden tea included a four-course menu along with an overview of tea etiquette detailing the proper way to partake in afternoon tea. Guests also learned about the symbolism of hats in the Black Church and how they came to represent status for some women, with many working hard to save up for the special accessory to don Sunday mornings.
Later, the afternoon turned into an impromptu hat fashion show as the ladies modeled everything from the conservative summer straw hat to the elaborate, bejeweled topper. Members of the Mount Sinai Praise in Motion dance group served the women.
As the day came to a close, one enthusiastic attendee quipped, "Are we doing this again next year?"
Mount Sinai M.B. Church is located at 3669 West 54th Street in Los Angeles.
