Veteran Meteorologist Byron Miranda will join NBC4 LA as a weekend meteorologist on May 2, 2011, it was announced today by Vickie Burns, Vice President News and Content.  In addition to providing weathercasts for the 6PM and 11PM weekend newscasts, Miranda will also serve as a fill-in weather anchor during weekday news programs.

Miranda comes to NBC4 LA from KGTV, the ABC Affiliate in San Diego, California, where he was the chief meteorologist and weathercaster on the 5PM, 6PM, 7PM and 11PM newscasts since 2009.

"Byron is a charismatic, seasoned meteorologist who will make a great addition to our team," said Burns.  "He has worked in the Los Angeles area and is familiar with the market, and the market is already familiar with him - it's a win-win for everyone," she added.

From 2002 to 2005, Miranda worked at KCBS in Los Angeles as the chief meteorologist for the station's Monday through Friday evening newscasts.

In 2003, he was awarded a Golden Mike Award for "Best Weathercaster in Southern California," and he is an Emmy-award winner from his work in Chicago.  Miranda has also worked in a number of other major markets including Chicago, San Francisco, and had a national presence on CNN for six years.

Miranda began his career as an assignment editor in Oakland, California.

Before finding his way onto television as meteorologist, he was also an Oakland police officer and an air traffic controller in the U.S. Air Force.

Miranda holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications from California State University, East Bay and has completed the Mississippi State University Broadcast Meteorology Program.  He is a member of the National Weather Association.
