First UMC Compton Marks 143rd Anniversary

First United Methodist Church will commemorate its 143rd Anniversary on Sunday, April 10, at 3 p.m., at 1025 S. Long Beach Boulevard in Compton. Pastor Christopher Carter invites the public to attend the celebration.

The theme is, "In the Right Place, At the Right Time, With the Right People." The guest preacher will be Rev. Byron Smith Sr., pastor of Curry Temple C.M.E. Church in Compton.

"Rev. Smith is a dynamic young speaker, often recruited to talk about his humble beginnings in Champaign, Illinois and his personal journey of servitude which now has him leading his own church in Compton," said Pastor Carter. "Rev. Smith's message is that we must focus on nurturing and tutoring our youth if we are to move forward as a society."

According to Kelvin D. Filer, Anniversary Chair, "FUMC - Compton is one of the oldest churches in all of California and maintains a proud history of ministry and civic involvement in the city of Compton and the surrounding communities."

He added, "We encourage everyone to come. It is good to be reminded of where we are as a society and to renew our commitment to contribute to our community and contribute now!"
