L.A. Transit board approves cuts to bus service

The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority board has approved cuts to city bus service in an effort to balance its budget.

City News Service says the board voted Thursday, March 24 to discontinue service on four bus lines, but service on some lines will be extended. The charges are scheduled to take effect June 26.

Metro Chief Executive Officer Art Leahy told the board the cuts will help remove low ridership lines and duplicative service.

The Bus Riders Union says the cuts will result in longer travel and wait time and more money paid in fares by forced transfers.

Leahy says the cuts will save about $32 million, with $9 million going back to the bus system.
