Sidney A. Nelson III

Sidney Anthony Nelson III, born and raised in Gardena, has been selected as a Student Ambassador with People to People and will travel to Italy, Spain and France this summer.

Selection to this prestigious program, established in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, has provided the opportunity for countless of thousands of American youth to travel abroad and share the goodwill of the United States while at the same time, to grow socially and responsibly.

Sidney, a member of Crenshaw Christian Center, said, "I have my eye on one day being a consummate pianist and composer. I am thankful to be chosen to be a part of a diverse and gifted group." Sidney is also seeking sponsorships and donations to help him fulfill his dream.

As a 9th grade member of the Price High Marching Knights Drum Line at Frederick K.C. Price III School, Sidney said he was honored to represent Price and play a key part in winning 2nd place at the annual Kingdom Day Parade held in Los Angeles in 2009 and 2011.

He said, "But, nothing compares to representing my country. As I get closer to the day of departure, I am still getting a grip on what I am a part of. I will be the first child in my family's history, going back many generations, to travel outside of the United States to Europe. My parents, especially my mom, are very proud. No one ever gave them this opportunity and they very much want me to fulfill this."

Students traveling with the People to People Ambassador Programs will live with a family in a foreign country, learning and understanding their beliefs, customs and hopes, while at the same time sharing the same. The program usually leads to an increase in personal aspirations, global understanding, and self-esteem for participants. Also, due to social networking, students return with lifelong connections and friendships.

When Sidney returns, he said he will share his experience with his fellow classmates. "Many were invited, but very few seized the opportunity. I want to encourage my friends to step out beyond what is familiar to them and see what they could be missing out on," he said.

To donate towards Sidney's trip, contact the People to People Program Office at (866) 794-8309 or visit http://payment.peopletopeople.com and make a gift to Sidney Nelson, ID# 10103477. Final payments for this program are due on May 1. More details on People to People are at www.peopletopeople.com.
