Recently, the Georgia-based Radiance Foundation brought its anti-abortion billboard campaign to Los Angeles. Launched during the weekend celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, the billboards spread throughout Los Angeles carried the message that African American children are an endangered species.
Radiance and its Northern California ally, the Issues4Life Foundation, are not the first to use the "endangered" metaphor in reference to African Americans, but their usage of the term at this point in time is a truly deceptive one.
It is also disingenuous and somewhat ironic. ALL Black people in this country--children, men and women--might be endangered because of the policies and practices of the very forces that are associated with this anti-abortion campaign.
Well-meaning and sincere African Americans--whether Christian or not--who are concerned about the issue of abortion in the Black community must also be careful and critical. The 'time-honored' but well-worn political tactic of, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend," is a bankrupt one.
Unity with anti-abortion white conservatives--like the alliances formed by Radiance, Georgia Right to Life and the Georgia Republican Party; Brian Follet of Heroic Media and LifeAlways, which is supported by Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin; Texas Pastor Stephen Broden (a recipient of the Ronald Reagan Gold Medal Award by the National Republican Congressional Committee) and Jesse Lee Peterson of Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny, which is supported by Fox talk show host Sean Hannity--does not bode well for the MAJORITY of African Americans who have already been born.
None of these connections were made, discussed, alluded to or admitted to in the L.A. Watts Times' feature article of March 3, 2011, titled "Black Women and Their Babies--Are They Being Targeted?"
A lie of omission is just as glaring as a patent untruth.
We should not be not be blinded by either.
