Can you give someone something that you do not have? To have real
love for someone, first you have to "really" love yourself. Most people agree
that when someone really loves themselves, they try to put themselves in
the best position possible to do well and have good things happen for them,
and to stay out of harm's way.
It is a well-known fact that gang members do time in jail sooner or
later, which is definitely not the best position to be in. They end up with felonies on their records, disqualifying them from most of the good-paying
jobs--which would not be putting themselves in a positive position to do well. They often put themselves in harm's way because gang members are always at high-risk of getting shot at, shot up, and/or killed. So, by definition, gang members have no real love for themselves. A gang's basic principles ensure that you will not really love yourself; because if you did love yourself, it would be much harder for you to harm someone who looks like you. It would make it much more difficult for you to put your life on the line without a purpose or a cause for your gang. This is why gangs donot encourage racial pride or education of self upon its members. Doing so brings about self-love. So, how can a gang member have real love for their homie, when they do not have real love for themselves?
