Several strategies to fight the proposed elimination of the Community Redevelopment Agencies (CRA) in California will be explored during the Mid-Year Convocation of the Fifth Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.   The Fifth District includes California and 14  other western states.

The annual gathering, led by Bishop T. Larry Kirkland Sr., continues through Friday, March 4, at the Airport Hilton Hotel, 5711 W. Century Boulevard in Los Angeles.  The Rev. Dr. Kelvin T. Calloway, pastor of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Los Angeles, is the host pastor.

“Many of our churches and communities will suffer a terrible blow if community redevelopment agencies abolished.  This agency has funded a number of projects through various non-profit Community Development Corporations (CDC) associated with churches of all denominations as well as independent ministries. In turn, these CDCs spearhead millions of dollars in construction that has been a primary job creator for our people as well as attract investors to build in our neighborhoods,” said Bishop Kirkland.

The recommendations provided by our Social Action Committee will be carefully vetted so we can mobilize our efforts to halt all discussions at the local, state and federal levels concerning the removal of the CRA,” added Jacquelyn Dupont-Walker, chair of the committee.

In the Los Angeles area, more than 200 projects totaling $369.6 million are at risk of being affected.  These projects include some under construction and others planned for the near future.

The Social Action Committee will deliver a report and recommendations on Friday at the Closing Plenary Session of the Mid-Year Convocation.
