Rev. Dr. Patrick Ross By Cora Jackson-FossettSentinel Religion Editor
For nearly 60 years, the Greater New Light Baptist Church has been spiritually vibrant in South Los Angeles. Located at 1154 E. 92nd Street, the congregation has thrived and prospered by keeping its focus on the word of God.The church was organized in December 1951 by Rev. J. O. Barnett who advised the 25 men and women joining him in the new church, ìIf you keep God in front, no strife can come upon you.î So with prayer and determination, the membership moved from a storefront on 92nd and Central to its current location in two years. That same ethic of dedication and commitment remains today, said Pastor Patrick D. Ross. ìI am absolutely pleased with this congregation. They are loving and involved in our many ministries including our first aiders, Evangelism Department and our three choirs.îDr. Ross, who was appointed to Greater New Light in 2008, is only the third pastor in the history of the church. He said, ìThe first pastor served eight years, the second served 39 years, and I have served a little over two years.î And each Sunday morning at 11 a.m., he can be found delivering the word of God to nearly 300 people and the membership continues to grow. ìOur main mission is to share the love and light of Jesus Christ through our lives so we can touch other lives. The teaching of the word of God is our main focus, so if someone is looking for a place where the actual truth of Godís word is being taught and not just preached, we are definitely a good place to journey and walk with the Lord,î said Dr. Ross.As Greater New Light prepares to celebrate their 60th year, several activities are planned throughout 2011. The Black History Celebration will be held February 20, the Church Picnic in July, and the 60th Anniversary Banquet set for December. The greater Los Angeles community is invited to fellowship with them at any of the activities, said Dr. Ross who added, ìIf someone is looking for a church where the word of God is being taught on a consistent basis, then Greater New Light is definitely the place to be. Weíre not a mega church and weíre not a storefront. But we will love you and weíre large enough to serve you.î For more information, call (323) 567-1993.
