Curry Temple C.M.E. Church will install a new sign to identify its place of worship at 322 West Rosecrans in Compton.

The groundbreaking ceremony takes place on Sunday, January 9 following the 10 a.m. worship service and according to Pastor Byron L. Smith, the event is a significant milestone in the church's history.

"The church is very excited because they have been working towards getting a sign installed at the corner of Rosecrans and Hickory for seven or eight years," said Rev. Smith, who was appointed in August 2010.

"This occasion is also important because of the historical journey that Curry Temple has been on for the last 49, going on 50 yrs."

The church previously worshipped in two other locations.  Also, for a period of time, services were held at Martin Temple A.M.E. Zion Church in Compton before the current edifice was constructed under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Charlie Haynes.

"It's been a long journey, but now we are moving into the phase of putting up the church sign, letting the community know where we are and what business we are in as far as encouraging souls to Christ," said the pastor.

Many members played key roles in seeing the project to completion.  "Jerry Reed, Chairman of Trustee Board; Elliot White, Chair of the Steward Board; and Valerie Blakely, who is our church treasurer; were very instrumental making sure that people were encouraged and rallied behind this effort," said Rev. Smith.

He added, "We are excited as a church and looking forward with forming partnerships with other faith and community leaders to help with the "New Birth" of the great city of Compton.

"Also, I'm very grateful and thankful to Bishop James B. Walker, presiding prelate of the 9th Episcopal District, and Wendell Oldham Jr., Presiding Elder of the Los Angeles District, for assigning me as pastor at Curry Temple C.M.E. Church in the city of Compton."
