Joins Family, Friends to Unveil Plaque Honoring Dixon's Historic Achievements

Supervisor Ridley-Thomas and the Los Angeles County Public Library Department today hosted a special dedication ceremony at the Culver City Julian Dixon Library to honor the achievements of the late Congressman Julian Dixon on the 10th anniversary of his death. Supervisor Ridley-Thomas was joined by Congressman Dixon's widow Bettye and their son Carey, Congresswoman-elect Karen Bass, Culver City Mayor Chris Armeta, Los Angeles County Librarian Margaret Donnellan Todd, former Chief of Staff Ed Johnson and numerous community supporters.

"Julian Dixon was the type of man we come to libraries to read about and be inspired by," said Supervisor Ridley-Thomas. "I can think of no more fitting a leader to whom a library should be dedicated."

Congressman Dixon served in the United States House of Representatives from 1973 to 2000 and was a leader on issues related to transportation, economic development and education. Under his leadership, $3.8 billion was secured for the construction of the Metro Rail Red Line, Culver City's Clean Bus fleet became one of the greenest in the nation, emergency relief funds were provided for affected businesses after the 1992 civil unrest, and the Olympic-sized Culver City Plunge Pool was repaired after the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

"Congressman Dixon was a man of much humility, who did not often take credit for his actions. But his achievements were indeed prolific and profound," said Supervisor Ridley-Thomas. "I am honored to stand here today with his loving wife Bettye and son Carey to honor the life and memory of this true public servant."
