Pastor George Hurtt leads congregation in giving to the needy.By Tonya E. DurrellSentinel Religion WriterSpend any time at Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church (MSMBC), and you will find the spirit of Thanksgiving boundless. In fact, Thanksgiving is just one more opportunity for MSMBC members to give back. Close to 50 volunteers recently demonstrated their commitment to helping others by delivering food baskets to some 200 deserving families in South Los Angeles on November 20.Led by Pastor-Teacher George E. Hurtt, MSMBC is committed to reaching out to the global community to help people in need. Following the devastation that literally shook Haiti to its core last year, MSMBC stepped-up an already aggressive partnership with the ravage-torn nation.Haiti Outreach EffortsGalatians 6:10 Foundation is a sole affiliate of the Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. Its mission is to display the love of Christ Jesus by helping people. There are three pillars that Galatians 6:10 Foundation is built upon, which are people, partnership, and projects. Pastor Hurtt is committed to putting the mission into action by personally visiting Haiti several times to assess the present needs of the people by building relationships with a network of pastors and giving direct support to their ministry. The local partner in Haiti is Food for the Hungry.Through loving contributions, the church has raised over $50,000 and already put $20,000+ into action. Unlike many of the large charities that have their money on hold, MSMBC is going directly to the source of the need.ìGiving is a must at all times. It is especially important during the cultural realities of Thanksgiving,î commented Pastor Hurtt. And, give they will. As Christmas approaches, MSMBC is spearheading yet another outreach program designed to help those less fortunate. About the Pastor-Teacher:In 1998, Hurtt graduated cum laude from the University of Detroit Mercy with both a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Services Administration and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies. He also earned a Masterís of Health Management and Policy degree from the University of Michigan which enabled him to become a commissioned officer in the United States Navy. He is also a Professor at the Los Angeles Bible Training School.Upon moving from Detroit to Southern California, the Lord led Hurtt to the Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church where H.B. Charles Jr. was the Senior Pastor. While never meeting him personally, Hurtt followed Pastor Charlesí ministry since 1992. In a great step of faith, Hurtt laid aside a promising military career to attend theMasterís Seminary to prepare for full-time ministry. He credits Pastor H.B. CharlesJr. with instilling in him the courage to make this decision. During this time, he joined the Mt. Sinai staff on a part time basis. He graduated from the Masterís Seminary with a Masterís of Divinity in May of 2006. This led to his promotion from apart-time to full-time position, where he served faithfully as Associate Pastor. On September 29, 2008, Mt. Sinai overwhelmingly elected George E. Hurtt as thenew pastor after Pastor Charles was called to a new assignment. Mt. Sinai is quickly becoming the church to visit. If the powerful and talented choir does not keep you coming back for more, then Pastor Hurtt's message delivered with a quick wit cadence and peppered with real-life analogies certainly will.† †The church is located at 3669 West 54th Street, Los Angeles. Sunday services are held at 8:00 AM, 9:45 AM, and 11:30 AM. †For more information on the MSMBC and their outreach programs, call the church office at (323) 291-1121.
