Dorsey Launches an Air Assault on Taft

Thursday night, the air at Jackie Robinson was crisp and clear. The crowd danced as the DJ played your favorite tune, and everyone waited for the Dorsey Dons to hit the field against the Taft Toreadors for their opening home game. The pre game celebration even included the introduction of several Dorsey alumni, players, parents and staff. They would forget to introduce one the best receivers the Dons have ever known, former USC and NFL star, Keshawn Johnson. Maybe the announcers knew Johnson preferred not to be bothered, or that the emergence of senior wide out Marvin Hall would be taking place in a few minutes.

Early in the first quarter Dorsey quarterback Joseph Gray threw a pass to Hall, and he raced down the sideline 80-yard for a touchdown before two minutes had ticked off the clock. One series later Hall would take another Gray pass 21-yards into the endzone.

Gray is a prototype quarterback with a rocket of an arm. On this night he completed 19-of-38 passes for 359 yards, 3 touchdowns and a Dorsey school record. Hall is not real big or tall, reminding you of Titus Young (Boise State/University High LA). Michael Robert, playing several positions, would also play big on this night with a 37-yard catch for a touchdown, two interceptions and a 38-yard field goal. Taft would eventually settle down in the second quarter with their quarterback Michael Bercovici running and completing passes. Maintaining that momentum in the second half, Taft would narrow the lead down to 30-24. With 2:41 remaining in the game Keith Lackey would clinch the victory for the Dons with a 59-yard scamper for a touchdown, giving them a 37-24 victory.

This will be an interesting year for the Coliseum league with Dorsey 2-0, and the defending champs from Crenshaw 0-2 after losing a barn burner to Norco 25-21. The Cougars had a chance to win the game in the closing minutes, but poor execution of their two-minute offense and a strong defensive stand by Norco eliminated the Cougars chances of a win on the road. However, football fans may remember the great teams of Birmingham with Milton Knox. The Patriots would lose every game of a very tough pre season and then demolish the competition in league play, so Crenshaw can not be counted out as of yet. They may continue to get stronger as the season goes on.

This week Compton will play Dominguez in the CPT Bowl

Both teams have goals of winning their league titles. Dominguez (San Gabriel Valley league) and Compton (Moore league).

The Dons of Dominguez are 1-1 after opening with a win over Crespi 14-11 and then losing a heartbreaker to Bishop Amat 21-15 in the final seconds, on a dropped pass in the endzone.

The Compton Tarbabes were playing a five o’clock game at Centennial and it appeared as though the Apaches would put them away by the way things were looking in the first half. Compton would finally call the right play springing Roger Jones loose for a 50-yard touchdown run. That would be the spark Compton needed because they would erase a 14-6 deficit to win the game 27-14.

This week the two Compton schools will face each other in a five o’clock game, that will be filled with Compton spirit, a Compton crowd and in the end, a Compton winner with bragging rights for the next year.

The Compton squad will have their hands full in the Moore League with a home game against Lakewood, a team that is unstoppable right now. They destroyed Locke 49-0 and embarrassing St John Bosco 27-7, with quarterback Tyler Schultz passing for 229 yards and two touchdowns. Then they will have to travel to Veterans Stadium in Long Beach to play Long Beach Poly in their season finale. Poly is nursing their wounds from a loss to St Bonaventure of Ventura that opened Poly’s eyes all the way up. So the Jackrabbits will really need a victory when the time to play Compton comes around.
