UCLA vs. Stanford 2010
The best Bruins team at the Rose Bowl on Saturday night did not come from UCLA, they came from Baldwin Hills.Running back James Smith, who runs track for the LA Jets and is one of the fastest boys in the nation for his age group, easily out ran the defense for this 50-yard touchdown.Baldwin Hills also scored another 50-yard touchdown that night and did not allow their opponent to gain a first down.Smith was the featured student athlete in the Sentinel’s July 8 issue.Read more about him at

This season is on the verge of getting away from UCLA after only two weeks of the season. After losses to Kansas State and Stanford, UCLA hosts No. 23 Houston this Saturday and will then travel to No. 6 Texas a week later.

That schedule has 0-4 written all over it.

UCLA’s problems run pretty deep. They cannot stop their opponents from scoring (UCLA ranks 102nd in points allowed out of 120 Division I-A schools), and they cannot put points on the board (ranking 115th in points scored).Their passing offense is ranked 115th.

It is very surprising to see an offense led by Head Coach Rick Neuheisel and offensive coordinator Norm Chow, two so called offensive masterminds, to be so horrible. And the defense was supposed to be the strength of this team, but they cannot stop anybody.

Houston probably cannot wait to light up the Rose Bowl on Saturday. They lead the nation in points scored, averaging 61 points a game. The only chance UCLA has in that game is if the offense can put some points up against a sub par Houston defense, but if this game turns into a shootout, forget about it, it’s going to be 0-3 heading to 0-4 after UCLA travels to Texas.

The pistol offense has pretty much failed.Outside of a few nice runs by running back Johnathan Franklin, UCLA embarrassed themselves offensively against Stanford.

UCLA passed for only 81 yards during the game and they were intercepted twice.

UCLA does not have the proper personnel to run the pistol offense. They have a drop back quarterback in Kevin Prince in an offense that’s asking him to do a lot of running, and to top it off he’s injury prone. He did not finish the Stanford game due to injury. They’ve pretty much put a square peg into a round hole.

The media picked UCLA finish 8th in the PAC-10.At this point the only team who looks like they may be worse is Washington St., but at least they have won a game.UCLA will host them a week after the Texas game.If they lose that game it will be hard to pick a game that they will actually be able to win.
