On receiving the 2010 'Good Guy Award' from the National Women's Political Caucus, Dr. Willie O. Jones exemplified the meaning of the award by his service to his constituents. The name of the award tells the story: someone who is considered a good guy as illustrated by his deeds and actions.
It was through observation of his work as the councilman of District Four in Compton that he was chosen to receive the award. And how he got there is the story of his lifetime and of his service as an educator. Dr. Jones was a school teacher, a school administrator and a member of the Compton College Board.
In an interview he said, "I've lived in Compton for almost 50 years, I've raised my children there. I've worked there and I've always been active in the community. When my kids were in school I was active in the PTA (Parent-teachers Association) and my son was in athletics. In fact, I got the lifetime achievement award from the PTA for my service." Dr. Jones stated in no uncertain terms about his relationship with the city, its residents and the community as a whole.
Transitioning from being an educator to an elected official, he brought a unique understanding to city government ... that only someone with his background could do, believing that the city deserves all that he can give, especially for the children with whom he had formed a lasting bond as an educator.
It is for all the aforementioned reasons listed above, and much more, that Dr. Jones was awarded the 2010 'Good Guy Award.'
