Broadway Federal Bank Hosts Genealogy Seminar

"Black Roots: Tracing the Family Tree" Led by Author, Lecturer and Genealogist, Tony Burroughs

On Saturday, July 17, Broadway Federal Bank hosted a genealogy seminar entitled "Black Roots: Tracing the Family Tree" at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center in Mid-City Los Angeles.

The seminar was led by Tony Burroughs, famed author, lecturer and genealogist. Mr. Burroughs taught genealogy at Chicago State University for fifteen years and is the author of Black Roots: A Beginners Guide to Tracing the African American Family Tree, which reached number one on Essence Magazine's bestseller list. The seminar was designed to give the Los Angeles community an opportunity to learn more about how to research their family history and ask questions of Mr. Burroughs.

"As a member of the Board of Broadway, I am most proud of the fact that for 60 years Broadway has worked hard to serve the community in many different ways," said Virgil Roberts, Broadway Federal Bank board member and managing partner, Bobbitt and Rogers. "The program on genealogy was another demonstration of Broadway's commitment to the community. The presentation by Mr. Burroughs inspired all who were present to learn more about their families and the history of African Americans in this country. It was a wonderful morning. In the future, Broadway will bring programs of interest to our community, as we continue to serve the community in the 21st century."

"Many people have the notion that genealogy is an expensive process, and while it can be, it doesn't cost anything to start," said Burroughs. "Begin by writing your autobiography. You are the first link in your family tree. Record your story and what you remember about your family and ancestors, and go from there."
