Congresswoman Diane Watson
Congresswoman Diane Watson

By Jason Lewis

Congresswoman Diane Watson made efforts to inform the public about what health care reform means to them by hosting a forum at Good Samaritan Hospital this past Saturday.

Congresswoman Watson had guest speakers, including Speaker Emeritus Karen Bass.

“This is very important, and very typical of the leadership of congresswoman Diane Watson, that just shortly after health care reform was signed that she would immediately try to educate her constituents about exactly what it means to them,” Speaker Bass said.  “I just think that with all the information and miss information out there, forums like these are exactly what is needed.”

The affordable Care Act Gives American Families Greater Control over their own health care.  There will be lower costs for American Families with insurance industry reforms, financial relief for working families and ending the “hidden” tax on American families.

There will be greater choices for American families with more affordable choices and competition, one stop shopping to put families in charge, and extended dependent coverage.

For seniors there will be lower costs with thousands in saving by closing the Medicare “Donut Hole,” reduction in unwarranted subsidies to insurance companies, strengthened financial health of Medicare, preventive care for better health, and affordable long term care.

Insurance company discrimination will be ended and there will be an independent appeals process.

Quality of care will increase for families with an increase in primary care practitioners and preventive care for better health.

There will be a quality of affordable health care for seniors with promotion of better care after a hospital discharge, control of chronic disease, and improvements to quality of care.

The Elder Justice Act will protect seniors from abuse and neglect.  Quality of care in nursing homes will be improved with standardized complaint forms, ensuring staff accountability, and there will be criminal background checks for employees in nursing homes.
