Park to be named for Charmette Bonpua

Councilmember Herb J. Wesson, Jr., was joined by MTV Star and skateboarding icon Rob Dyrdek, community members and Los Angeles City officials in breaking ground on the new Charmette Bonpua Safe Spot Skate Spot at the Rancho Cienega Sports Complex.

Named in memory of Charmette Bonpua, Councilmember Wesson's late Chief of Staff who passed away in February, the ceremony celebrated the start of construction of this new 15,000 square foot state-of-the-art skate plaza. This skate park was one of the last projects on which she worked. Completion of construction is expected within the next six weeks.

"Our kids love skateboarding. Unfortunately, there are so few places where they can safely skateboard," said Wesson. "Charmette Bonpua loved kids and understood the need for this facility in our community. Her inspired leadership helped create this park and naming it in her memory is very appropriate."

Others attending the event included John Mukri, General Manger of the Recreation and Parks Department, and the artist Nijel Binns, who is creating a bas relief bronze plaque for the site.

The project is a public-private partnership between the Rob Dyrdek Foundation, which is providing funding along with the City of Los Angeles, which has designated funds from Proposition K, Proposition 40, and the federal Community Development Block Grant program.

This is the second Skate Plaza designed and opened by Rob Dyrdek in Councilmember Wesson's district, the first being the Lafayette Park Skate Plaza. It was at the opening of that Skate Plaza that Wesson and Dyrdek agreed to work together to bring this new facility to Rancho Cienega. Wesson and Dyrdek have plans to continue building other Skate Plaza locations in the 10th Council District.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to have Rob Dyrdek as a partner in this project, and I'm looking forward to working with him on other projects," said Wesson. "You know from his TV show that he is a hilarious entertainer. But when he is working to build safe places for our kids to play, he's all business. Our partnership is going to deliver great things for our community."
