Ola Beatrice CarpenterOla Beatrice Carpenter passed June 7, 2010. She would have been 91 years old in July. She was born Ola Beatrice Norris to the union of James Preston Norris and Sara Viola Norris in Rockmart Georgia.
During World War II Ola and several young ladies were trained on IBM's first generation machines. She worked at March Air Force Base until the end of the war. Ola moved to Los Angeles and worked for the County Dept of Charities for nine years. She was promoted to the Dept. of Water & Power and worked in all phases including, Key Punch Operations, and Data Control Supervisor. She returned to Data Transcription from a manual system to electric system. Later Ola was promoted to Programmer Analyst. This interesting career included training young people.
She met and married Luther T. Carpenter at Second AME Church where she was a choir member for many years. Her brothers James and John preceded her in death. Her husband Luther passed in 1988 after 36 years of marriage. She leaves one son Robert L. Carpenter, one sister- in- law Geraldine Norris, several nieces, nephews, also great nieces and nephews.
Ola was active in Golden Glory Seniors, Mary Cambell Missionary Society, member of the glee club, Briarwood Women's Club, former Briarwood HOA #2 Board Member, led the Briarwood Community Activity Committee, missionary at Second AME, Black Square Dancers, Inglewood Women of Vision, Inglewood Education Club, was a political campaign volunteer for many years, and an avid Los Angeles Lakers fan. She touched so many lives with her friendship, loyalty, leadership, love, fashion, wisdom and style. Old B. Carpenter (Ms Ola) although gone will not be forgotten.
Services will be held at Second AME, 11:00 a.m. at 5500 S. Hoover Street, Los Angeles, CA 90034. Repast will follow at the same location.
