Sentinel News ServiceThe Edith Holland Bryant Women's Missionary Society (WMS) will present its Annual Day Celebration on Sunday, May 30, at Bryant Temple A.M.E. Church, 2525 West Vernon Avenue, in Los Angeles.
"We invite the public to join us in honoring the outstanding work of our Missionary Society. Â The theme of this special day is, A Prayer for our Children," said Rev. Dr. Clyde Oden, senior pastor.
"Our guest speaker at the 8 a.m. worship will be Mrs. Mary Kirkland, Episcopal Supervisor of the Fifth District of the A.M.E. Church. Â At our 11:15 a.m. service, Dr. Loretta Howell Lillard, WMS Connectional Commissioner, will speak," he said.
Mrs. Kirkland is married to the Rt. Rev. T. Larry Kirkland, presiding bishop of the Fifth Episcopal District. Â As Episcopal Supervisor, she provides leadership and guidance to WMS units operating in all A.M.E. churches in the in the Fifth District. Â She also served as supervisor in the 9th and 17th Episcopal Districts of the A.M.E. Church.
For more than 20 years, Mrs. Kirkland headed the WMS at Brookins Community A.M.E. Church where she oversaw its growth from zero members to becoming a viable part of the 5th District. Â In addition, she established a young women's unit to inspire those under the age of 40 to use their talents and gifts for kingdom building.
Mrs. Kirkland's career in education spans over 30 years. Â She earned a bachelor's degree from Jackson State University and completed graduate studies at Delta State, Pepperdine, and California State - Dominquez Hills universities.
Dr. Lillard, a Professor of Education and Diversity at Kennesaw State University in Georgia, administers the International Handy Simmons Scholarship for the A.M.E. Connectional WMS. Â Her service in the WMS and Young People's and Children's Division includes Local, Area and Conference YPD Director; 1st and 2nd Vice President on the local level, and Conference Branch President. Â Among her awards and honors are Life Member, Women's Missionary Society (2007) and The Sister of Sarah Award (2006).
A graduate of CSU-Dominguez Hills, Dr. Lillard received a master's degree at Pepperdine, andÂ a Ph.D. from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Â Also, she serves on the board of directors of the Georgia Citizens Coalition on Hunger and the End World Hunger Foundation.
