Groundbreaking at the new Westside Park
Groundbreaking at the new Westside Park

In many areas of our inner city where there is rapidly increasing population density, there is very little open space and very few parks. In fact, much of the African American community in Los Angeles is considered "park poor."

For these reasons, Councilmember Herb Wesson's leadership was particularly noteworthy in the creation of the new Westside Park located in the West Adams community, which recently had its groundbreaking ceremony and celebration.

Located on Clyde Avenue between West Adams Boulevard and Jefferson Boulevard, the three acre site was once the location for the annual African Marketplace. In recent years it has attracted graffiti and crime.

"Our community needs and deserves a safe and clean place for residents and their families," said Wesson. "Creating something special like this in a time of diminishing resources has been a real challenge, but we got it done."

The $9 million project will be financed primarily through funds from the voter-approved Proposition O water quality improvement measure. The park will include a state of the art water reclamation system.

The park will incorporate recreational benefits for the community, including new perimeter fencing, jogging paths, and a sensory garden. A separate project managed by the Department of Recreation and Parks will install a Universally Accessible Playground, fitness equipment and solar lighting after the Proposition O improvements are completed. Construction work on the park will begin soon and is scheduled to open in March 2011.
