Mayweather/Mosley hits MGM Grand Saturday
By Kenneth MillerSpecial to SentinelCome Saturday May 1st at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the garrulous wonder Floyd (Pick a Nickname) Mayweather and the silent warrior Shane Mosley of Pomona will put their HBO 24/7 mini-series behind them and have to climb into the ring and fight. All of the prompt and circumstance will be over and then his accidental blockbuster will be revealed to a worldwide Pay Per View audience and a sellout crowd of mega stars and high rollers in what many are predicting to be a super fight. If you went to any street corner and ask about this fight you would get varying opinions. The hated one Mayweather will be a prohibitive favorite at fight time, but many are conceding that Mosley will hand Money his first defeat in his 41st bout. There is reason to support the argument that Mosley can win, even at his softening age of 39. He has won 7 of his last 10 fights and while he is a five time loser in 51 fights, four of those came at the expense of two men-the late Vernon Forrest and Winky Wright. The only common opponent they have is Oscar De La Hoya, who lost twice to Mosley and once to Mayweather. The flamboyant Mayweather and Mosley have more in common than what has been revealed on their HBO mini-series that is more hype than reality, especially on Mayweather's side. The Money persona is that it is all about the might dollar bill. A cash and carry machine that former promoter Bob Arum predicted would be empty by now. Plenty of cars and the outer make up of a rap star gone wild, but the reality is that Mayweather has strong belief in God, family and lives a squeaky clean life style. While he loves the limelight, he is not yet blinded by it and is playing this game to the tune of long term financial security for his children and family.Something that sort of mirrors Mosley, whose moniker "Sugar" is a borrowed theme from the greatness of Ray Robinson and Ray Leonard.Introduced to the sport of boxing by his father Jack Mosley, Shane had super starred written all over him from early on when he fought under the lights of Forum Boxing and even the antiquated Olympic Auditorium.Promoter Don King though so highly of him that he decided that he'd rather cast his loot with Mike Tyson instead of Shane, a decision that in hindsight doesn't look so good. The fighting Mosley has been a model of consistency in the ring and out. His once power boxing technique that his dad introduced him to made him a crowd pleaser. He was quick and flashy, but powerful enough to finish off an opponent.Although he still possess some of the speed and power at his advanced age, it took him the entire 12 rounds to catch a cigarette smoking Ricardo Mayorga and Fernando Vargas was long done before Mosley polished him off in their rematch a few years ago.Mayweather is a different sort of monster, one that even a younger Mosley would have had some major problems with.He too comes from a fighting father, Floyd Sr. who ultimately took to a different route to pay the bills. What makes Mayweather such a great fighter is his ring intelligence and relative fear once he is inside of it.Mosley will take a punch to give one, but Mayweather would much rather you miss altogether and then he counter. His hand speed is really over stated because he a much more economical puncher than he was when younger. He hits you when you don't anticipate it and if just so happen you catch him, he grabs and spins out of harm way. It's not pretty and has not endeared him to boxing fans, but the results are perfecto. What fans are wishing for is that he will frequently engage in a slug fest with Mosley, something that will not happen.Think Zab Judah all over again, and you come to the conclusion that Floyd will again be laughing all the way to the bank. It will be a gallant effort on Mosley's behalf, but all that will be left of him is to return to the chitterling circuit or hang up the gloves for good.No one has the heart of Mosley, but it might be that determination will be expose him to the ultimate danger that he will encounter on May 1st.
