Nancy Carroll Burgess Quishenberry

On April 12, 2010, Nancy Carroll Burgess Quishenberry departed this life. Born December 14, 1936 in Osceola, Arkansas, Quishenberry spent her early childhood years in Flora, Mississippi. She graduated high school in 1954 and went on to attend Tuskegee University.

Having experienced racial tensions, Quishenberry's family moved to California where she continued her education at L.A. State College. There she joined the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and became a life member. In 1958 she was elected international undergraduate Zeta-Woman-of-the-Year.

During a fraternity event, she met Eugene Quishenberry, a pledge of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. In May 1960 the two were married at Calvary CME Church in Pasadena, California and to their union was born Lyle in 1962 and Larry in 1967.

In her early years of marriage, Quishenberry held such jobs as tax consultant, supervisor for Blue Chip Stamps, and front office supervisor for Dr. Marilyn Watson, MD.

The family moved in 1975 and resided in Altadena, California for 23 years and in 1998 settled in Pasadena. She returned to school at Pepperdine University completing her undergraduate education and receiving her Master's Degree in Library Science.

Quishenberry went on to teach at Roosevelt High School and serve as interim librarian. Making the move closer to home, she became employed at Five Acres Boys and Girls Aid Society of Los Angeles as a special education teacher.

As recipient of several awards and honors, Quishenberry enjoyed planning sorority events such as Zeta Phi Beta's finer womanhood programs but preferred staying behind the scenes. She was fond of listening to jazz and often traveled with her husband. She remained an active leader in her church and community.

She is survived by her husband, Eugene Lester Quishenberry, and leaves to cherish her precious memories sons Lyle Lester and daughter-in-law Lisa; Larry Eugene and daughter-in-law, Patrice; four grandchildren; brother, Walter Burgess and sister-in-law Joynell; nephew, Walter Burgess, Jr. and grand niece, Desiree Ortega.
