In an article in the Sentinel entitled "Audrey Collins, the Chief Judge," it was mistakenly stated: "Judge Audrey Collins is the first African American to occupy that office."
That was incorrect.
Judge Collins has informed us, "I am not the first African-American chief judge of the Central District of California. In fact, I am the third African-American chief judge.
"The first African-American chief judge is Chief Judge Emeritus Terry Hatter; the second African-American chief judge, and the first African-American woman chief judge, is Chief Judge Emerita Consuelo Marshall."
We regret the inconvenience.
Judge Collins is a well-respected jurist and is highly considered by her peers as can be gleaned from the following comments by fellow judges.
The Honorable Candace Cooper, Presiding Justice Emerita of the California Second Appellate District said, "She is a quiet and self-effacing lady who never seeks any limelight, but she is so accomplished, brilliant and talented, and admired by her peers that she has made us all so proud of her for all these years. And she couldn't be nicer, more approachable and thoroughly decent; she is fabulous."
The Honorable David Cunningham III, Judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court said, "She is a very astute presiding judge; she has the highest regards for both the litigants and also for the bench, particularly the federal bench. She is very hard working and talented, and the government is getting an incredible gift from such brilliant people like her."
The Honorable Kelvin Filer, Judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court said, "Judge Collins is an exceptional judge and she maintains herself in a manner that we want all our judges to carry on. She is extremely intelligent, very deliberate, likes to make decisions after she has considered all of the evidence and has heard from all sides. She is just an absolute a gem of a bench officer and someone who I think is just an exceptional role model for any person who desires to move upward through the legal arena."Â
