Clinical Trial at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

Patients who suffer from carotid artery obstruction caused by plaque buildup, but are not considered good candidates for open surgery, may be eligible to participate in a clinical trial at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Neurosurgeons use a minimally invasive procedure to clear the blockage and insert a stent designed to keep the artery open. Obstruction of the carotid arteries in the neck can restrict the supply of blood and oxygen to the brain, and in some cases lead to stroke. For advanced disease, a surgical procedure called endarterectomy has been the standard treatment.

In earlier studies, the new minimally invasive procedure-which opens the arteries of the neck in the same way angioplasty and stenting are used for heart disease-was found to be comparable to the surgical approach in risks and outcomes.

The current Phase 4 study is a multicenter trial specifically for patients who are not well enough to undergo surgery or are thought to be at high risk for surgery.
